Today I went with\u00a0Doaf to the Upper Truckee River meadows area, in South Lake Tahoe.\u00a0 First we tried the east side of the marsh,\u00a0accessing it off\u00a0San Francisco Road.\u00a0 We immediately heard the raucous sounds of the Yellow-Headed Blackbirds<\/strong> that were numerous in the area.\u00a0 I had seen these in the Reno marshes and in my Reno backyard, but this was the first time\u00a0I’d seen them in the TBY birding area.\u00a0 We weren’t able to take the trail all the way to the lake, because the trail became too wet and we had left our waders at home.\u00a0 We saw several water birds flying, including great blue herons, and what we later identified as White-Faced Ibis<\/strong> and Forster’s Terns<\/strong>.\u00a0 The trail roughly followed the housing development, so we could see into people’s back yards.\u00a0 Along a back fence with some scrubby bushes, we spotted at least one Marsh Wren<\/strong>.\u00a0 I was happy to identify it as I’ve been seeing many wrens, but they all turn out to be House Wrens.\u00a0 We also heard woodpecker-type tapping and were able to locate a beautiful Northern Flicker<\/strong>.\u00a0 After this brief excursion we drove round to the west side of the Upper Truckee marsh, near the boat marina.\u00a0 By then it was after 11 am and getting quite hot.\u00a0 Even with a lot of people around, we saw geese, ducks more Forster’s terns, and one more new TBY bird, a Black-Billed Magpie<\/strong>.\u00a0 In fact, we saw several magpies, which seemed to be scolding us.\u00a0 It was a great trail, and I’ll vow to get there at 7 am next time I come – so many people and with kids and dogs and plus a hot day, the birding there wasn’t so good.<\/p>\n Today I added\u00a05 species to my Tahoe Big Year\u00a0list!<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/www.judyduffyphotography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/JDP-TBY-20180710-9756.jpg” title_text=”Click to zoom in.” show_in_lightbox=”on” align=”center” _builder_version=”3.5.1″ custom_margin=”0px||0px|” custom_padding=”30px||5px|” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ \/][et_pb_text admin_label=”Image Caption” _builder_version=”3.5.1″ text_font=”||||” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” text_orientation=”center” custom_margin=”0px||0px|” custom_padding=”0px||0px|” use_border_color=”off”]<\/p>\n Lorquin’s Admiral Butterfly<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/www.judyduffyphotography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/JDP-TBY-20180710-9962.jpg” title_text=”Click to zoom in.” show_in_lightbox=”on” align=”center” _builder_version=”3.5.1″ custom_margin=”0px||0px|” custom_padding=”20px||5px|” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ \/][et_pb_text admin_label=”Image Caption” _builder_version=”3.5.1″ text_font=”||||” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” text_orientation=”center” custom_margin=”0px||0px|” custom_padding=”0px||0px|” use_border_color=”off”]<\/p>\n Upper Truckee Marsh<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” make_fullwidth=”on” background_color=”#ffffff” parallax_method_1=”off” _builder_version=”3.0.105″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Gallery Container” _builder_version=”3.5.1″ text_font_size=”20″ link_text_color=”#000000″ background_color=”#ffffff” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” use_border_color=”off”]<\/p>\n
